Cheap(ish) wheel choices.......

There's more cheap options out there than there used to be,

cheapest of the cheap:

Black outlaw II's (15x7's) for $65 each:

Black 8-holes (15x8's) for $74.95:

Not as cheap, but I really like these

Cragar Eliminator Wheels (the name alone makes them worth it ;) ) in Grey,

15x7's = $119.99

15x8's = $131.99 (@ Jegs)

Black is slightly more for some sizes:

ION's are pretty cheap at the 'buywheelstoday' site (anyone ever use these guys?):

$79.99 for 15x8's

Fake beadlock ION's only $5 more:

These Incubus - 511's are a little over the top for me:

but just $99 for 16x8's:

So, what do you like for the Grandpa Jeep?

Picture it shinned up a bit, 1" higher up front, and the wheels wrapped around slightly wider tires (255/70R15's vs these 235/75R15's)

I'm leaning towards the Cragars, or the Black Outlaws, because of the more MJ friendly back spacings, but I'm wondering what you guys think (remember, it's gonna stay 2wd  )

are the black Outlaw II's aluminum or steel? gotta be steel...

Aluminum.

Here's the natural finish ones for the same price:

I bought some generic Outlaw II's 6, or 7 years ago for $62.50 each (15x7's, PBL brand).

The clear coat didn't last long, but I bought them for off road, so it didn't really matter. :dunno:

There's more cheap options out there than there used to be,

Because dollars to doughnuts they're made in china now

10 years ago I bought a set of ARE Baja's (the 5.25" bs 15x8's made for our Jeeps).

Each box said "Made in the USA" on it,

and each wheel had one of those tiny little oval shaped, gold "made in China" decals on it.

They were inside the wheel, where you can't see it with the tire mounted (I bought the wheels bare, so I could mount my own tires). :fs1:

Since then, I either:

pay more, for made in USA stuff,

or look for the absolute cheapest bottom line, so I'm not  after paying top dollar for China crap.

FWIW, later on I bought a set of American Eagle Baja copies,

cheaper than the ARE's, polished better, and they really were made in the USA. :USAflag:

Can't go wrong with the Cragars; old school timeless design, I've always loved them. Gawd knows where they are made today though, but I'd think they would still have the Cragar QC applied. I like the grey Eliminator Wheels.

I'm still working through in my head what I want this one to look like when it's 'done',

but if I go with aftermarket wheels, they will definitely be aluminum.

I let a set of 5.9L wheels go by on CL the other day for $400,

I really like them on the other MJ, I'm just not sure I'd like them on this one. :dunno:

I've also had my eye out for a set of Rubicon Moabs, but I'm not sure if that's the direction I want either (since I'm keeping the old style sheetmetal).

FWIW, there are now cheaper Moab wheel knockoffs out there:

They also make them in Black, but I didn't dig up a link to those.

am i the only one who likes the wheels that are on it?

especially for a "grandpa truck"?

I think you're on to something there...I'm picturing those wheels that are on the truck already, either powdercoated or painted gloss black, with the shiny Jeep center caps, maybe a small red pinstripe around the outer rim...now those would look sweet, and no one else would have a look like that! Plus, powdercoat or paint would be a LOT easier to keep clean than any aluminum wheel...

  • 4 weeks later...

Just to complete the thread, I ended up going with some Craigslist wheels & tires:

Before:

Picture it shinned up a bit, 1" higher up front, and the wheels wrapped around slightly wider tires (255/70R15's vs these 235/75R15's)

After:

Yeah, the 2wd hubs interfere with the centercaps.

Thanks!

Kinda takes the 'Grandpa' out of it tho :(

With the coil swap, and AT tires, the floaty-soft ride is long gone,

might as well take the mudflaps off, and stop calling it Grandpa. :(

Maybe it's not too late,

Think I can still save it with some whitewalls, curb feelers, and an AARP sticker for the back?
