freakjeep93 Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 hey guys i sound really dumb here but do you need shackles on you leaf spring with an mj because i have 3 in my yard and none of them came with shackles on them and I'm realy comfused??? :help:
Geonovast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 A leaf spring would not function and likely self-destruct without shackles. We're gonna need some pics.
jpdocdave Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 well you only need them if you want the leaf spring and axle to stay under the truck, they are what hold the spring to the frame/unibody. do you mean you have 3 trucks w/ no shackles? or 3 spring packs w/ no shackles?
freakjeep93 Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 best i got at 1000 at m=night but it sorta shows whts goin on its just these jeepsd were drivin on the road for years and nothin happened and none of them had shackles...... :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:
Pete M Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Not a lot of wheel travel up and down with no shackles. :hmm:
freakjeep93 Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 idk thats how 3 jeeps came to me I'm really confussed now but should i put some on anyway
Geonovast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 idk thats how 3 jeeps came to me I'm really confussed now but should i put some on anyway Definitely. I don't see any reason to not have them on.
Geonovast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 note: BE CAREFUL when you pull the springs off. They've got to be under some tension, and when you manage to clear the bolt out, it may snap, and it's not going to care what's in its way.
MiNi Beast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 yes you must have shackles on. Shackles are what allow the leaf to flatten out under compression. Without the shackle the spring can not flatten out and will cause some serious issues.
akamcbird Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 correct me if I'm wrong but don't 90s era fords have shacle less front leaves?? for some reason an f350 is configured this way in my head :hmm: ?
Eagle Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 FreakJeep, the shackles on an MJ are at the back end of the springs. Your photo doesn't show me what's happening back there. Take another pic, from a lower perspective and showing the back and of the spring. Without shackles, the suspension would tear itself apart within a few miles.
Pete M Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 did they have a different way to let the leafs flex?
Geonovast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 did they have a different way to let the leafs flex? Maybe it's on a wheel in a slider like the belt adjusters on our trucks :rotfl2:
HOrnbrod Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 What looks like OEM MJ shackles are there in the OP's pics, left side, when you enlarge and zero in.
Eagle Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 What looks like OEM MJ shackles are there in the OP's pics, left side, when you enlarge and zero in. I was thinking the same thing, but a photo from a better angle would clarify. I am absolutely certain that THREE Comanche's did not leave the factory without shackles. I think there's just a misunderstanding as to what a shackle is.
freakjeep93 Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 ok ill take another pic without t he tire on later today thanks guys
MiNi Beast Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 here this explains the reason behind shackles http://www.quadratec.com/jeep_knowledge ... cle-93.htm
freakjeep93 Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 okydoky i got those other pics this is on the pass side with the tire off towards the rear of the spring towards the front if you need anything else i will try to help you so you can help me
reson46 Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Yes, you do need shackles. The shackles were probably robbed from your MJs to use as XJ lift shackles just before you received them. I don't see how the sheet metal hangers of an MJ would hold up to any driving without shackles. correct me if I'm wrong but don't 90s era fords have shacle less front leaves??for some reason an f350 is configured this way in my head :hmm: ? Yes, F350s have shackles. They are set up with a shackle reversal from the factory. Willy
freakjeep93 Posted September 1, 2009 Author Posted September 1, 2009 nope this is how they were bouht all my mjs execpt one was owned by my dad and the other one was owned by my grandfather and i know the history and that none came with shackles and they worked fine ??? :dunno: Yes, you do need shackles. The shackles were probably robbed from your MJs to use as XJ lift shackles just before you received them.
