looks like a D20 if ya ask me.

:hmm: I think you mean an M20... ;) There is no such thing as a D20. The Model 20 is perfectly round and the one in that pic is definitely oblong and is an 8.25

A Dana 20 is a transfer case.

If your talking about an AMC 20 (axle) it's similar but not quite the same. The XJ's only had the D35, D44, and Chrysler 8.25" (all in a few different varieties).

27 spline versions are a bit above the Dana 35.

29 spline versions are a bit below the Dana 44.

I would rate the MJ version of the M-20 just a bit below the MJ/XJ Dana 44.

i found this on a cherokee and noticed it looked different than the d35

would it be worth the 175.00 they want for it?

what are some differences between the d35 and 8.25? :dunno: (i've never heard of it)

any way too tell what it is?

If its under a 96 or below its a 27-spline. (1996 was a crossover year so some have 29-splines it the plant ran out of the 27s, but uncommon)

If its under a 1997-2001 its a 29-spline.

3.07s if its a 6-cyl manual

3.55s if its a 6-cyl auto (most likely the combo)

4.10s ifs its a 4-popper.

okay i need to go check on that

any luck on you guys knowing the gear ratios they came with?

From looking at the illustration, it appears that the D44 lowers your ground clearance a few inches over the D35…?

does it really even matter? a dana 35 is junk in every way shape and form.

the 4.0 5 speed definitely is 3.07's

the auto could also have 3.73's if it's got a tow package. that's only a possibility, no guarantee.

the 4 cylinder gears vary ALOT.

4 cyl 5 speed = 3.55, 3,73, 4.10 gears as available choice.

4 cyl 4 speed = 3.55

4 cyl auto = 3.73, 4.10, 4.56 with 4.10 or 4.56 being more likely. a 87-88 xj with aw4 auto guaranteed has

4.56 gears. it is the only guarantee with them other than the 4 cyl 4 speed

with an 8.25 if it is a 4 cylinder it will more than likely have 3.55 gears, and same goes for a 4.0 equipped jeep.

cool

I'm going back tomarrow to take a look and find out more about the jeep

by the way no one said if it was worth the swap? d35 to 8.25

Posted

All depends on the gears. A 97+ 8.25 is a much stronger axle and worth swapping if there is no disadvantage in gear ratio. The earlier 8.25s are only a slightly stronger axle. Not really worth swapping unless there is a benefit in gear ratio.
